Strangers with Candy

10 OF THE BEST
Breakfast

You could happily spend all day here, including dinner, but weekends start with a brunch bruschetta laden with prosciutto and balsamic mushrooms, or smoked salmon and horseradish crème, assured coffee and service as bright as the sunshine.

Contemporary
Score 14/20

Don’t be fooled by looks. This Redfern perennial, with its wooden chairs and tables set with paper napkins, seems a little weary and the paint is peeling, but the menu is creative and contemporary, and the floor team is upbeat and on the case. A clever timbale of
sherry-cured salmon tartare comes with crisp-fried wonton skins and excellent wasabi cream.

A beautifully presented
duck confit teams nicely with an agrodolce apple and ginger sauce, although it was a little heavy on the onions, low on ginger, and more apple would have cut through the duck’s richness. Al dente Spaghettini, tossed with blue swimmer crab meat, chilli and plump black mussels, is full of big flavours, and seasonal steamed vegetables are cooked to a snappy bright green with a delicately crisp finish.

Sauternes cream with burnt caramel is a sexy take on crème brulée, with a smooth, runny centre, smothered with a generous pile of raspberries.

Knowledgeable service and relaxing surrounds make this a stranger you can trust.

"This former shopfront is home to an engaging eatery. The eclectic charm of comforting wood tones, candle-lit tables and burgundy walls and the warm welcome from staff; not to mention the food, which is consistently appetising."

"The colours are bold and the name is cheeky, the service chirpy and the food striking. So take something perky or quirky to quaff, chill out in the courtyard or cosy up at the front, and let the pleasures wash all over you."
