Strangers with Candy

This former shopfront is home to an engaging eatery. The eclectic charm of comforting wood tones, candle-lit tables, burgundy walls and shelves stocked with Veronica Stute’s own produce - including orange toffee sauce - is irresistible, as is the warm welcome from staff; not to mention the food, which is consistently appetising.

Seasonal specials might include a sumptuous starter of grilled black figs, prosciutto, goat’s cheese and grape dressing; or perhaps a deeply satisfying gnocchi of semolina and haloumi.

The tea-smoked Atlantic salmon is something of a signature dish, its subtle flavours drawn out by a fresh-herb risotto. Lamb shank with celeriac remoulade dissolves deliciously in the mouth. To finish, a crème brulée with stewed rhubarb is a perfect match.

The front dining room can get boisterous, but there’s a quieter rear courtyard where potted and hanging plants and soft lighting lend an extra hint of romance that soon turns strangers into friends.
