      Strangers with Candy

Score 13/20

This charming local restaurant rambles through an old terrace with dark timbers and banquettes in the small dining area at the front. The menu rambles all over the world.

Pork belly with shao xing wine is hard to pass up as an entrée. Prawn wontons are served in a clear broth of pronounced sesame and lemongrass flavours, giving Chinatown wontons a run for their money. Pan-fried fish cakes taste better than they sound, and come with strips of crisply fried prosiutto and tomato salsa - but perhaps ours had a bit too much potato and not enough fish to achieve a perfect balance.

Tea-smoked salmon borrows an old Chinese technique but comes with European garnishes of horseradish cream and dill - the result is simply delicious. Wild barramundi steamed in parchment concentrates all the seasoning and juices, yet on our visit muddy-tasting fish let the chef down.

Strangers is already popular with the locals (so be sure to book), and Veronica Stute’s adventurous cooking deserves a wider audience.

"You could happily spend all day here, including dinner, but weekends start with a brunch bruschetta laden with prosciutto and balsamic mushrooms, or smoked salmon and horseradish crème, assured coffee and service as bright as the sunshine."

"This former shopfront is home to an engaging eatery. The eclectic charm of comforting wood tones, candle-lit tables and burgundy walls and the warm welcome from staff; not to mention the food, which is consistently appetising."

"The colours are bold and the name is cheeky, the service chirpy and the food striking. So take something perky or quirky to quaff, chill out in the courtyard or cosy up at the front, and let the pleasures wash all over you."
